Occupation
Retired from General Manager Boating Industry Training Organisation
Activities
65 year old Robert Brooke is a true citizen of “City of Sails” having lived all his life in Auckland and starting sailing at just 6 years of age.
His father, Jack, a New Zealand Yachtsman of the Year, an OBE and top naval architect and scientist, encouraged Robert to sail “as soon as he could swim”.
Robert sailed his way through the classes and represented his country in Dragons, in the 12ft Q Class, 18ft V Class and in teams racing (the latter hosted by New York’s Larchmont Yacht Club in 1980).
Robert enjoyed teams racing so much; he set up the secondary schools team racing competition (the first team’s racing competition in New Zealand and now a huge event on the annual sailing calendar) and then the Interdominion’s (against Australia).
Robert designed small sailing dinghies and then keelers which he built and campaigned very successfully.
A self-confessed “vintage boat nut” Robert first bought the 1909 Arch Logan gaff rigged Rawene and restored her and then totally rebuilt Linda, a 50ft 1927 Col Wild launch which had burnt to the waterline.
Career:

Robert completed a 5 year boat building apprenticeship and, in his last year, was already teaching other apprentices, something he continued to do for the next 20 years.
After a brief spell working for another boat builder, he set up his own yard, which he ran successfully until an accident saw him return to his “love of teaching”.
His 35 year educational career culminated in his appointment as an  Advisor to Secondary Schools. He also was involved with the rewriting of Workshop Technology  and Technical Drawing prescriptions and became assistant chief examiner for Design Technology.
He was also Chief Examiner for both Trade and Advanced trade Qualifications Ship, Yacht and Boatbuilding for many years
Following his “retirement” in 1999, he enjoyed building clinker dinghies before being asked to head up the new Boating Industry Training Organisation. He built up to a staff of 5 and saw the number of apprentices under his wing increase from 50 in 1999 to 525 today.
He was also  responsible for licensing the BITO Qualifications to Nova Scotia. Canada
During this time he worked closely with industry, NZQA , TEC and ITO’s to ensure the best possible outcomes for apprentices and industry.
He retired from BITO in December 2006

 Harold Desmond Kidd
AUCKLAND
Occupation
Lawyer
Activities
Harold was born in Herne Bay, Auckland 1936, to a yachting family. Harold was educated at Takapuna and Devonport Primary Schools, Takapuna Grammar School and Auckland University College and graduated in 1960 with degrees in Law and Arts (Latin and Ancient History).
He has practiced as a lawyer since 1959 in Auckland and in the Pacific and is now the senior partner of a North Shore law firm, specialising in Trusts and Company Law.
Harold has had extensive experience in yachting from a young age, initially in centreboarders and over the years has restored several yachts and launches. He inherited from his father a passionate interest in the history of leisure boating in New Zealand. With Robin Elliott, he co-writes Vintage Viewpoint, a monthly column in Boating New Zealand magazine. They have several books published on the subject including the definitive history Southern Breeze.
Harold has contributed papers for symposia held by the New Zealand National Maritime Museum and written text for Te Ara, the online Encyclopedia of New Zealand on the subject of yachting in this country. He has also written several entries for the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and contributed to the International Encyclopedia of Yacht Designers.
His other interests have included flying antique aircraft (a De havilland Moth Minor), restoration of vintage cars and motorcycles and rallying and racing them, competition trap shooting and music of all sorts.
Harold’s deep interest in the School arises from his concerns that the once-strong boatbuilding traditions of New Zealand, which he has spent 25 years documenting, will certainly disappear if the traditional skills are not passed on to the present generation of young people.
Harold currently owns the 1909 35ft ketch Seaward and is part owner of the 1880 centreboard yacht Jessie Logan and the 1909 keel yacht Loloma.
